The most important aspect of provisioning the ship is the duration of the mission. 900 days is a long time to provision for. Not only is nutritious food and adequate water required. Fresh breathable air is required. Food spoilage must be avoided. Wastes and byproducts must be recycled where possible and safely stored or jettisoned when recycling is not possible.

Any methods used to prevent food expiration, such as hermetic sealing, freezing, irradiation, must be light weight and use little power. Any means to produce fresh food must be efficient and fit within the supported ecology of the habitat. Any fresh meets from poultry or live stock needs to be supported until harvest and must not contaminate the habitat.
