Technology (ION drive X4)
If the FOLDINGSS craft is to successfully move to distant orbits and
back, all with just the propellant on hand at departure, a very high
specific impulse propulsion system is required. The high specific
impulse capabilities of ION electric thrusters is attractive. Recent
experiments with multi-channel ION thrusters (the X3 three channel
device, for example), suggest that ION drives of sufficient thrust
can be created with current or cutting edge technologies. The
FOLDINGSS craft would be a great test bed for this type of drive.

Technology (UJT based SAP)
The FOLDINGSS research spacecraft needs a great deal of power for
its ION drives. The habitat also needs considerable power but faces
mechanical constraints of size given the inertial effects of its
rotation. UJT (ultimate junction technology - 3rd generation three
junction photovoltaic solar technology) offers the a great advantage
for high power density solar collection. Multiple solar technologies
can be characterized during the FOLDINGSS missions. The rolled cell
concept, differing junction technologies, etc.
